For Rogers, 罗 Luó, traditionally 羅, is the most direct starting point for a short Chinese surname. It preserves the opening of the documented transcription 罗杰斯/羅傑斯, and 罗 has an independent surname entry under the reading luó. Compare 洛 Luò if you prefer another character with the same Mandarin consonant and vowel sequence but a different tone. 1, 1.1, 2, 3

The decision is how much of Rogers you want to retain in a name you use day to day. 罗 is one syllable; 罗杰斯 carries much more of the original surname. Both can be useful, and your original spelling can stay alongside a chosen Chinese name.

The full surname comes first

The National Academy for Educational Research's English-name section gives Rogers—羅傑斯. The ICRC Beijing name list independently gives Rogers—罗杰斯. These two sources agree after traditional-to-simplified conversion. They provide a concrete written starting point, rather than a newly invented phonetic spelling. 1, 1.1

Read as ordinary Mandarin syllables, the form is Luó-jié-sī. All three characters transcribe Rogers. It is misleading to assume that 罗 is already your family surname and 杰斯 your given name merely because that division resembles a Chinese full name.

Choosing 罗 as a new conversational surname is a separate, deliberate step. You keep the initial character and set aside the rest of the transcription, then choose a Chinese given name on its own merits. If an existing professional Chinese name already works, this article is a comparison, not a reason to replace it automatically.

Confirm 罗 as a surname

The education ministry's dictionary lists 羅 as a surname under luó, the rising second tone. The shortened name is therefore supported independently of the foreign-name lists. 罗 is its simplified form, and the intended surname reading is Luó. 2

The character's other dictionary meanings include a net, collecting and a type of silk fabric. They are ordinary Chinese associations, not the meaning of Rogers and not a description of a Rogers family's occupation. You do not need to build a story about networks or weaving to justify a sound-based choice.

For introductions, 我姓罗,Wǒ xìng Luó means “My surname is Luó.” Showing the character remains helpful because a written Luo without a tone mark does not distinguish 罗 from several other possibilities. A direct explanation is 罗杰斯的罗, “the 罗 in 罗杰斯.”

Luó changes more than the spelling

In familiar British pronunciations, Rogers begins with an r sound and contains the j-like consonant heard in judge. The final s is voiced like z. Whether the later r is pronounced depends on the accent, including differences within Great Britain. Compare your own family pronunciation rather than treating one accent as the rule for everyone.

Luó replaces the opening r with l, changes the vowel to Mandarin uo, and adds a rising tone. Choosing only this syllable removes the j-like middle consonant and the rest of the English ending. It is not a sound-for-sound reduction, and an unfamiliar listener will not necessarily identify Rogers from Luó alone.

The longer Luójiésī retains a representation of more of that sequence, but it also adds Mandarin syllable structure. In particular, sī is not simply English final z: the Mandarin initial is voiceless and the syllable has its own vowel-like nucleus. Keeping the full form improves continuity without producing an exact English pronunciation.

洛 Luò is independently listed as a surname under luò in the education ministry's revised dictionary. Its traditional and simplified spellings are identical. The falling fourth tone distinguishes it from 罗 Luó, even though their pinyin consonant and vowel sequence is otherwise the same. 3

洛 also occurs in geographic names such as Luoyang and the Luo River. Those associations can help you explain the character, but choosing 洛 does not imply that you come from those places. Neither does it make a geographic connection part of Rogers's history.

The practical trade-off is clear: 洛 may suit the appearance or rhythm you prefer, but it no longer reproduces the first character of 罗杰斯. The fourth tone does not restore the English r, the middle consonant or the final z. I would choose it for a positive preference for 洛, not because it supposedly translates Rogers more accurately.

Rogers is not interchangeable with every similar name

The Dictionary of American Family Names describes an English route through Roger with an added -s, and an Irish route in which Rogers was adopted for a Gaelic name. The entry also notes separate bearers bringing the surname to North America. This supports caution about assigning one ancestry to everyone named Rogers. 4

A final -s in a hereditary surname does not need to become a Chinese character meaning “son.” Nor should Rogers, Rodgers and French Roger be silently merged because their spellings are close. The ICRC list itself gives Roger as 罗歇 and Rogers as 罗杰斯, showing why the exact spelling and language matter here. 1, 1.1

There is no need to borrow a Chinese historical person's surname because that person held a role or virtue loosely associated with an old European name. For this decision, 罗 and 洛 already allow a specific comparison grounded in present-day Chinese surname use and the actual transcription.

Try the name in the situations that matter

Place your prospective Chinese given name after 罗 and 洛. Say each full name as an introduction and ask someone familiar with Mandarin to read it from the characters. Then ask what they would write after hearing it. A difference in tone is easy to overlook when comparing only unmarked Roman letters.

For work, keep Rogers next to the Chinese name until the connection is established. If a document asks for the name in your official records, follow that document's requirements rather than assuming a conversational name changes them.

Start with 罗 Luó for the direct link to 罗杰斯. Choose 洛 Luò only if its different character and falling tone are a deliberate preference. Keep the full transcription when recognizing Rogers matters more than shortening it.
