For Ross, 罗 Luó is the clearest starting point if you want to retain the opening of a documented Chinese rendering, 罗斯. 洛 Luò offers a different character and a falling tone, but does not recover more of the English surname. Both have independent surname evidence. 1, 2, 3

Choose 罗 for visible continuity; consider 洛 because you prefer that character and the way it works in your full Chinese name. Keep 罗斯 if representing Ross in full matters more than adopting a one-character Chinese surname.

What 罗 keeps from 罗斯

The National Academy for Educational Research's English surname list records Ross—羅斯. 罗斯 is the corresponding simplified form. The working Mandarin reading is Luó-sī. The source documents a rendering, rather than a requirement imposed on every family. 1

Ross is usually a single syllable in English; its vowel differs across accents. Mandarin Luó has an initial l and a rounded vowel sequence, rather than the English r and its following vowel. The second syllable sī accommodates a sound that is a final consonant in English. Taking only 罗 removes that second syllable altogether.

The important point is not the appearance of “Ro” and “Luo” in Roman letters. The proposed Chinese surname comes from the established Chinese character. It remains an adaptation, and your own pronunciation of Ross should be the starting reference if it differs from a general English form.

The same table also renders Rose as 羅斯. This is a useful reminder that Chinese transcriptions can overlap. It does not make Ross and Rose the same spelling or establish the same family history.

罗 is a surname in its own right

The Ministry of Education dictionary records 羅 under luó with an explicit surname sense. The ordinary character has several other meanings, including a net and light silk fabric, but those meanings need not describe a person bearing the surname. 2

For this choice, the strongest reason is written continuity with 羅斯. You can say 我姓罗,罗列的罗 and show either 罗 or 羅 according to the writing system you use. The second tone rises; it is neither English stress nor a statement about personality.

If you already use a complete Chinese translation of your name, check whether a one-character version could cause confusion in work or study. It can be useful to keep Ross alongside the Chinese name in a bilingual signature.

洛 keeps the syllable shape but changes the tone

洛 Luò is independently documented as a surname under luò. It has the same initial and vowel sequence as Luó in standard Mandarin, but a falling fourth tone rather than a rising second tone. The written character also changes. 3

That gives you a concrete comparison: 罗 and 洛 are not interchangeable spellings of one Chinese surname. 洛 is not literally extracted from 罗斯, and changing the tone does not restore the English final s. Its geographical associations, including the Luo River and Luoyang, may appeal to you, but they do not automatically translate Ross.

Try 我姓洛,洛阳的洛 as a way to identify the character. This is an explanation of the chosen writing, not a claim that your family comes from Luoyang. If the river association is your main reason, be comfortable treating it as a new personal preference.

Ross has more than one historical route

The surname dictionary reproduced by FamilySearch records several histories for Ross. These include British place-name routes, a continental personal-name route and a German horse-related route. The entry therefore gives no basis for assigning one translation to every American family named Ross. 4

A United States statistical row does not identify which history applies to an individual. Nor should the resemblance to the English word rose be used to convert every Ross into a floral name. A documented personal family history could make a meaning-based choice more relevant; without it, 罗 remains the simpler and more defensible connection.

There is also no need to attach a Chinese classical author or religious identity to the name to make it feel meaningful. The character you choose and the way you use it already supply a clear explanation. Historical or literary interests can be discussed separately when they are genuinely yours.

Make the final choice with the given name

Say Luó and Luò before the same proposed given name. Ask someone to read the characters without pinyin and listen to the whole sequence. Both tone and word associations may matter in combination.

My default is 罗 Luó. Choose 洛 Luò if its different writing and tone are advantages you actually want. You do not need to claim that one is the uniquely correct Chinese equivalent of Ross.
