If Begum is the part of your name you want a short Chinese surname to represent, 贝 Bèi, traditional 貝, is a well-supported starting point. It keeps the opening of the published rendering 贝古姆, while the Chinese education ministry dictionary independently records 貝 as a surname pronounced bèi. You can equally keep the full rendering or your original spelling. 1, 2

First decide what Begum means within your own name. A word can have a history as a title and also be used as a person's name element. Its position in a British surname list does not settle how you or your relatives understand it.

Start with your own name structure

Oxford's dictionary describes begum as a respectful title with historically gendered and religious uses. That explains a word, not the identity of every person whose name contains it. Modern naming arrangements vary: the UK Passport Office's Bangladesh profile distinguishes personal names, surnames that can differ within a family, and shared family names. 3, 4

For an adult choosing an everyday Chinese name, the useful questions are personal: Is Begum your inherited family surname, your registered last name, a name element you value, or a title in the particular context? Which part would you like Chinese-speaking colleagues to recognise? Your answer should guide the adaptation.

Nothing in the spelling alone establishes an individual's religion, gender, marital status, caste, nobility or genealogy. Nor should a naming article tell someone to remove Begum because it has also served as a title. If it is the name you use and want represented, that is a sufficient starting point for this discussion.

Compare the full rendering with its opening

The Farjam Foundation uses 拉娜·贝古姆(Rana Begum) in its Chinese exhibition material. This provides a published person-specific example of 贝古姆; it does not impose a universal translation on everyone called Begum. 1

Keeping 贝古姆 preserves more of the name's shape. It includes a g-like consonant in 古 and an m-like consonant in 姆, though Mandarin spreads the name across three syllables. It is useful when retaining recognisability matters more than adopting a one-character Chinese surname.

Choosing 贝 is a separate, deliberate adaptation. The removed 古姆 does not become your Chinese given name by default. You would choose a given name separately, then introduce the whole Chinese name alongside Begum when necessary. A translation example is evidence of written usage; the surname dictionary supplies the separate evidence that 贝 can stand on its own as a surname.

Learn the surname reading

贝 Bèi has the falling fourth tone. The traditional form is 貝. The dictionary's surname sense is listed under this reading, so it is not being inferred from the character's use in a foreign name. 2

In ordinary vocabulary, 贝 refers to shells. You can use 贝壳的贝, “the 贝 in the word for shell,” to identify the character. The naming link to Begum is its sound and place in 贝古姆.

For introductions, 我姓贝,Wǒ xìng Bèi, means “My surname is Bèi.” Use that sentence only if you have decided to treat 贝 as your Chinese surname. If you are retaining the full name rendering, you can instead show 贝古姆 and explain which part of the original name it represents.

What the short form changes

Oxford gives the English title pronunciation /ˈbeɪɡəm/. This is a useful comparison point, not a requirement that you pronounce your own name that way. Bengali, Urdu, English and other family or language contexts may lead you to a different starting sound. Let the bearer supply that sound. 3

Relative to the cited English form, Bèi retains a b-like opening and a diphthong but loses the g, the last vowel and the final m. Mandarin pinyin b normally represents an unaspirated voiceless stop, so it is not identical to English voiced b. The falling tone is also new; it does not reproduce English word stress.

These losses matter. A person hearing only Bèi will not necessarily identify Begum. Put the Latin spelling beside the Chinese name on a work profile or introductory message where the connection matters. If that feels like too much explanation, retaining the full rendering may suit you better.

Meaning can remain a personal choice

You may value the dignity or family associations that Begum carries for you. That does not require a literal Chinese title such as “lady” or “princess,” and such a title would not automatically be a Chinese surname. The cultural meaning of your original name can stay in your own explanation.

A sound-led surname is also compatible with a separately chosen given name that expresses a value you care about. Any such given name needs its own character, pronunciation and whole-name review. This article does not prescribe a gendered given name or infer your beliefs from Begum.

Try it in the setting where you will use it

Compare Begum, 贝古姆 and 贝 followed by your prospective Chinese given name. Say each in a short introduction, then ask a Mandarin speaker to read the characters without a pronunciation prompt. Check whether the listener understands which part you intend as the surname.

Keep your existing official name where a form requires it; choosing an everyday Chinese name does not itself change a legal record. The practical recommendation is 贝 Bèi when you want a compact, evidenced link to 贝古姆, with the full rendering available when recognisability takes priority.

The recorded British Surnames table places Begum at website position 73 for Great Britain, excluding Northern Ireland. It supplies no count for this row. The reference period, underlying counting unit and collection method remain unverified; no claim of an official current UK population rank is made. 5, 5.1
