布 Bù is a direct starting point for Brooks: it is the first character of the established transcription 布鲁克斯/布魯克斯, and it is independently recorded as a Chinese surname. 卜 Bǔ keeps the same Mandarin consonant and vowel with a different tone and character. If a water association matters more than sound, 水 Shuǐ is another real surname to consider.
My first comparison would be Bù and Bǔ, using the same proposed Chinese given name. Shuǐ belongs in the comparison only if you actively want the broader water image.
From Brooks to Bù
The National Academy for Educational Research lists Brooks — 布魯克斯 in its English surname table. The simplified form is 布鲁克斯; its ordinary Mandarin reading is Bùlǔkèsī. NAER, printed page 10.
Collins gives /brʊks/ for the surname. The English name has one syllable; the transcription distributes it across four Mandarin syllables. Keeping only 布 removes the r and the final k and s. Mandarin b is an unaspirated stop, and u is not the English vowel /ʊ/. This is a small, useful sound connection rather than a replica of Brooks. Collins surname pronunciation.
The full transcription remains useful when recognition of the original surname is the goal. You do not need to convert all four characters into a Chinese family name or treat the last three as a ready-made given name.
布 Bù preserves the first character
The Ministry of Education dictionary explicitly records 布 bù as a surname, separately from meanings such as cloth and spreading or announcing something. You can therefore retain the opening character with a documented surname reading. Entry for 布.
Bù has the falling fourth tone. A simple introduction is 我姓布, Wǒ xìng Bù. If you need to explain the character, 布料的布, “the 布 in the word for fabric,” identifies its spelling. It does not say that Brooks means cloth or that your ancestors worked in textiles.
This is the strongest reason to try 布 first: the existing written link is visible and the independent surname evidence is clear. It is not a claim that this choice is automatically natural with every given name.
卜 Bǔ changes the tone
The dictionary also records 卜 bǔ as a surname. Its third tone differs from the fourth tone of 布; a toneless “Bu” hides that distinction. The surname reading used here is Bǔ, not a guessed reading from an unrelated word. Entry for 卜.
Both Bù and Bǔ discard the same parts of Brooks. Changing the character does not recover r, k or s, nor make the Mandarin vowel identical to the English one. The comparison is about which tone sequence and written character you prefer in your full name.
As a word, 卜 relates to divination. That historical meaning does not assign a belief or an occupation to everyone with the surname. If the character's association does not suit you, you can keep 布 without needing to invent a reason that 卜 is invalid.
The brook connection has limits
The Dictionary of American Family Names usually treats English Brooks as a form of Brook, associated with living near a brook. It cautions that the final s need not mean multiple streams. It also records Americanized surnames of other origins, so the English explanation is not a genealogy for every American Brooks family. DAFN2, 2022, via Ancestry.
水 Shuǐ, meaning water, is itself an attested surname. It can preserve a broad water association if that is your chosen theme. It is less specific than a small flowing brook, and it has little sound resemblance to Brooks. Entry for 水.
For an adult choosing a name, that trade-off can be perfectly deliberate: “I chose a surname connected with water.” It would be less accurate to say “Brooks translates exactly as 水,” or that the Chinese and English families share an origin.
A practical shortlist
- 布 Bù: keep the opening character of 布鲁克斯 and its documented surname reading.
- 卜 Bǔ: try the same basic Mandarin syllable with the third tone and a different character.
- 水 Shuǐ: choose a broader water association, accepting a substantial sound change.
Say the whole name at conversational speed and ask someone to read it from the characters. Keep both the tone-marked pinyin and the chosen character in your notes. Use Brooks alongside the Chinese name when people need to connect the two identities.
The American count is from 2020
The 2020 U.S. Census surname release lists BROOKS at rank 85, with a published frequency of 244,116. The release was published on April 14, 2026. It describes the 2020 Census, with disclosure-avoidance processing, rather than a count of people living in 2026. The spelling is not merged here with Brook, Brooke or Brookes. Census release and data.
Research note
The NAER row establishes the transcription; separate entries for 布, 卜 and 水 establish surname use and readings. The surname account supports a conditional water route, and the Census supports the statistical context. Candidate order and sound losses are editorial comparisons, not proof of ancestry or a guarantee about an untested full name.
