For Ellis, I would begin with 艾 Ài, the opening character of the documented transcription 艾利斯 Àilìsī. 艾 is independently recorded as a Chinese surname pronounced Ài. If you prefer a simple high vowel, 伊 Yī is another real surname, but it changes both the sound and the written connection. My starting choice is 艾 for continuity; I would choose 伊 only because you prefer its sound in your complete Chinese name.
Neither character reproduces Ellis. You can also keep Ellis / 艾利斯 as your family-name representation and use a shorter chosen Chinese name socially. You do not have to make one form do every job.
Start with the whole surname
The National Academy for Educational Research lists Ellis—艾利斯 in its English surname table. That is evidence for a published transcription, rather than a name invented by breaking English spelling into individual letters. The three Chinese syllables represent the foreign surname as a whole. 利斯 does not automatically become a Chinese given name when 艾 is placed first.
Collins gives a British pronunciation of Ellis as /ˈɛlɪs/. Àilìsī adapts that sound to Mandarin syllables and tones: the first vowel becomes an ai diphthong, the l begins a separate syllable, and the final s is represented by another syllable. A Mandarin tone is not the same thing as English word stress. In particular, the final sī is not simply an English “see” appended to the name.
If you already use an established Chinese spelling, check that before changing it. The form in this article gives a sound starting point; it does not override your own published name or your family's way of saying Ellis.
艾 Ài keeps the actual opening character
Shogakukan's Chinese–Japanese dictionary explicitly lists a surname sense under ài. This is the separate check that matters: appearing in a foreign transcription would not, on its own, establish a Chinese family name or its surname reading.
Ài has a falling fourth tone. Its vowel moves across the syllable, unlike the English /ɛ/ at the beginning of Ellis. Choosing only 艾 also removes the l, the second vowel and the final s. The connection is therefore mainly the first character of a known Chinese rendering, with a broad vowel-led resemblance. It is not an exact one-syllable equivalent.
艾 also names mugwort. That gives you a concrete way to identify the character, for example 我姓艾,艾草的艾。 This means “My surname is 艾, the 艾 in mugwort.” It does not mean Ellis historically meant mugwort, or that a plant association must become part of your identity.
艾 has another reading, yì, in some words. The surname proposed here is Ài, as the dictionary labels it. Keeping the tone mark while you learn the name is more useful than treating every occurrence of the character as interchangeable.
伊 Yī makes a different sound choice
伊 is independently listed as a surname under yī, a high, level first-tone syllable. It offers a short vowel-led option without the ai diphthong. However, its vowel is higher than the /ɛ/ of Ellis, and it still loses the l and the ending. It is not “more accurate” simply because it is short.
It also abandons the first character of 艾利斯. This is a choice of another Chinese surname, not a simplified spelling of 艾. A straightforward introduction would be 我姓伊,读 Yī。 The dictionary's literary pronoun uses of 伊 do not make it a surname for only one gender.
Try 艾 and 伊 before the same proposed given name. Listen for the fourth-tone opening versus the first-tone opening, and see which character you are comfortable explaining. That is a practical comparison you can make without claiming that either character captures your personality.
Meaning is less straightforward than the spelling suggests
The surname dictionary describes more than one history for Ellis, including an English personal-name route through Elis/Elias and a Welsh route through Elis and Elisedd. It also notes other possibilities. Those explanations should not be flattened into a single meaning for every living Ellis family.
For that reason I would not automatically choose a religiously suggestive Chinese surname from one origin story, or a surname meaning “kindness” from another. A documented family history could make a particular association personally meaningful. The spelling Ellis alone does not identify that history, your religion, or your values.
Make the choice in the name you will actually use
Choose 艾 Ài if you want the visible connection to 艾利斯 and accept the ai vowel and fourth tone. Choose 伊 Yī if you deliberately prefer its different vowel, tone and character. Keep 艾利斯 when retaining more of the original surname is the priority.
Put the chosen surname first, then test it with your intended given name in writing and speech. Check accidental word combinations and ask a Mandarin speaker to read the characters before showing the pinyin. No individual given name or administrative use is validated here.
